Privacy Policy

Plain English summary

  • We do not require an account. We do not collect your name, email, or any personal identifier.
  • We store the products you scan and the ingredients you enter, but not who scanned them.
  • We use a few essential services to make the app work: Vercel (hosting), Upstash Redis (product database), Google Gemini (AI ingredient analysis).
  • Your dietary concerns and country preference are saved in your browser's local storage. They never leave your device.

What we collect

When you use Consumer Clarity, the following information is processed:

  • Barcode and search queries — sent to our servers and Open Food Facts to look up products.
  • Photos of ingredient labels — when you upload one, it is sent to Google Gemini for text extraction. The photo may be stored anonymously to help build our product database.
  • Ingredients you enter — stored anonymously in our product database so future users searching the same product benefit from your contribution.
  • Anonymous usage statistics — page views, top-scanned products, error rates. Collected via Vercel Analytics with no personal identifiers.

What we do not collect

  • Your name, email, address, phone number, or any contact information
  • Your IP address (beyond standard server logs that are not retained)
  • Your location (we use the country you select; we do not access GPS or geolocation)
  • Cookies or tracking pixels for advertising

Where data lives

  • Browser local storage: your dietary concern selections, country preference. Stays on your device.
  • Upstash Redis (via Vercel KV): product data — names, ingredients, images. Anonymous, no user attribution.
  • Google Gemini API: we send product names, barcodes, and uploaded images for AI processing. Google's data handling is governed by their terms.
  • Open Food Facts: we query their public product database. They have their own policies.

Your rights

Because we do not collect personal data, there is nothing personal to delete or request. If you have submitted ingredients for a product and want them removed, contact us and we'll remove that product entry from our database.

Children

Consumer Clarity is intended for general audiences. We do not knowingly collect data from children. Since we collect no personal data from anyone, this is not a concern in practice.

Changes to this policy

If we change how data is handled, we'll update this page and the "Last updated" date. Material changes will be communicated via the app.
